Just when you thought it was safe to be a Catholic...
Ratzinger's election as Pope is ratification for his anti-reform policies. His comments on homosexuality, women in the church and contraception push him to the right of an extremely conservative group of men. This was an ideal opportunity for the Cardinals to elect a more moderate leader who understands societal change and can adapt the policies of the church accordingly.

Do you think that his ideas on those subject should reflect some sort of international consensus, as opposed to what is written in the Bible? Maybe next time, they will elect a pope who throws out the old Bible because it is insensitive to women and homosexuals, in favor of a new Bible written by some modern day intellectual.
I'm not proposing throwing out the bible, just a mild re-interpretation would be fine.
Bible means book.
Books are open to interpretation.
The Bible is open to interpretation.
Some of those interpretations will say that homosexuality is a sin, etc. Of course it has to go both ways. But come on, its a goddamned book. The times have changed; we should recognize that and be respectful of it as well. They do not need to completely overhaul their system, but there is no need to shun or disrespect certain people. Mild reinterpretation would do no harm.
... and, Martha Burk will rip you a new one, lest you forget her masculine fortitude.
Chickenhawk, a lot of people believe that this "book" is the inspired word of God. I understand if you don't. It really doesn't matter to me, since I am not Catholic. I will take your advice and steer clear of the Martha Burkes of the world. They scare the hell out of me.
"...some modern day intellectual?" - ha ha ha!
Okay, what does the bible say about contraception, anyway?
Your right. The Bible says nothing about contraception. That would fall under the "rules made by men" that Jesus condemned the Pharisees for.
