A couple of quotes

On Judge Roberts.

Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York: "If you answer important questions forthrightly and convince me that you are a jurist in the broad mainstream, I'll be able to vote for you."

Virginia Republican Senator John Warner: "I've never seen the credentials of any nominee with stronger qualifications than Judge Roberts."

On Michael Brown

Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman: "I certainly will support your nomination."

Republican Senator Ben Campbell: "I cannot state firmly enough that I believe Michael Brown to be more than qualified to serve FEMA and the people of this country as part of the administration."

Democrats just don't get it.

Mochi!

Just checking in. Been a week on the road. Have blogged wifi, but have had little time for anything else.

Hope you are well!

These shirts are dumbass opportunist whose every thought is just the advancement of their power base. The next election is all they think about. This is Republican and Democrat--ALL of our politicians.

Not surprised when I hear it from either side of the aisle.

Wait and see, Mochi, I have a feeling Roberts may end up making Ginsburg look like a conservative. Not all is lost for the left...

News Snipet 'Blog: HAS BUSH BETRAYED CONSERVATIVES ONCE AGAIN?

Most of the dems have become lapdogs of the repubs and their corporate-elite masters. The repubs are drunk with power, and the dems are their codependent enablers. We are so overdue for something new, which is why so many of us call ourselves progressives.

Although, I still say Barbara Boxer is great.

Here's what I have to say about Roberts, which may be slightly off the topic of this post...

Wouldn't we want a person - any person, now - who is going to be the leader of the most powerful court in the country to have experience? I'm not even bringing up conservative/liberal issues, I'm simply saying this guy has very little experience as a judge, and now he's going to LEAD the Supreme Court? That seems bad to me.

Smorg,

Not sure if this will help, but here are the Chief Justice's responsibilities:

Court duties

• The chief justice's vote carries the same weight as those of eight associate justices.
• If the chief justice sides with the majority opinion on a case, he can write the opinion himself or assign it to another justice.
• Leads oral arguments from the center chair on the bench
• Leads closed-door conferences where votes are cast on pending appeals and cases heard in oral argument
• Through personal leadership and coalition-building can help move the Court, over time, toward a certain ideology. Legal scholars note Chief Justice Earl Warren helped move the Court to the left, William Rehnquist to the right.

Administrative duties

• Oversees administrative duties of the Supreme Court, including scheduling cases and setting deadlines for appeals and opinions
• Heads the Judicial Conference, the chief administrative body of federal courts; sets rules over civil procedure and evidence; handles budgets, security and staffing
• Chief advocate, spokesperson over legislation affecting federal courts
• Names judges to serve on various administrative, judicial panels
• Issues year-end report on the federal judiciary that sets priorities and highlights accomplishments and problems in federal courts

Special duties

• Presides over presidential impeachment hearings in the Senate
• Traditionally presides over presidential inauguration
• Serves as chancellor of Smithsonian Institution

Maybe this will answer a few of your questions.
