Bureaucracy still killing people
With all the presssure on FEMA they are still failing to adequately protect the citizens of Louisiana and Mississippi. It's not enough to fire these people, they should be sent to jail.
Update 9/6: Trent Lott identifies ANOTHER example of FEMA incompetence.

Hi NLs!
Back. Will be headed back next weekend.
It was indeed an eye-opener. The first thing I did upon return was to make my usual rounds of the 'blogs, and of course in view of what took place down there, the ignorance of the 'blogs and media is even more astounding. Makes me understand once again that 'blogs and most of what passes as "news" are largely opinions, which are just like, well...you know, everyone has one.
Also, until you visit, doubt the media, question everything you read.
90,000 square miles of devastation. FEMA--anyone standing back and criticizing them is...well, I would have to say is probably politically motivated, ignorant, or simple minded. (Mochi, I realize you are just referencing an article here) A FEMA ten times the size we now have, twice as well equipped could not handle something of this magnitude. I think the only organization that has truly dropped the ball is the Red Cross--the one that we truly placed our trust in, who is very slow to react to the immediate needs in the area.
NL's you should see, you should be there, you should experience it. I wish all Americans could go there. It is a humbling experience filled with sadness and terror, but also one of strength and heroism, . Rest assured, this entire nation will feel the impact of this one for decades to come.
I think that what will be taken out of this is that the nature of man is revealed by such disasters. The blame-seekers should hang there head in shame, the opportunists should be made to suffer the same fate, the victims should be welcomed to our cities, our homes, the heroes should be venerated.
The most disgraceful thing in America right now is the politics of Katrina. For that, I am embarrassed.

Hi Jack, where were you and who did you talk to? I spoke to a friend whose mother is in Mississippi and they said they were furious with FEMA.
Hi Mochi!
I was all over Lousiana and Mississippi unloading trucks. I spoke to dozens and dozens. Yes, there were many people angry at the government, there were many people angry at God, George Bush, even with their own family members for not being better prepared. But, there were also many people thankful for their lives, many a person resolved to rebuild--I receieved many an undeserved hug and kiss from people who have suffered far more than I ever have.
I guess at this point, I really don't feel I do anyone a service by talking about it.
Regards,
-Jack
