Working Hard
President Bush talks a lot about "hard work" in his speeches. He must have used the expression almost as often as "freedom and democracy". So now he's on a 5 week vacation in Crawford. The average fortune 500 CEO takes 2.3 weeks of vacation per year. Our President has spent 25% of his presidency either at or on route to Crawford. Republicans will say he's still getting briefed, still answering calls. Big deal, I check my email on vacation and answer work related calls, most of us do.
Fact is this guy sucks, he's hopeless, he's done nothing for America. Now he's trying to hide in his ranch and work out how the hell to get rid of Cindy Sheehan, another thorn in his side. Meanwhile what happened to fixing this country? Where is the talk about social security, Medicare, education and poverty? What about that massive deficit and the inevitable real estate crash? While we've all focused on Iraq, banks have been lending money hand over fist and now the Fed seems to be intent on putting more pressure on over-streched consumers. Oil prices are out of control. Apparently Bush's Saudi buddies aren't towing the line and the promise of an abundance of Iraqi all has really materialized. All this is having a huge impact on the ability of average Americans to make ends meet.
So where is Bush? What's he doing about all this? Oh that's right, he's on his ranch, "working hard".

Mochi,
This is an example of someone speaking of something they have no clue about.
Just an observation...

You are saying I have no clue about what is going on?
I remember the same thing being said about Clinton and his vacations and Clinton and his travel. I told the individuals then that until they had been president and walked a mile in their shoes they had NO clue what the job required and what was being done. Truth to tell, Mochi, I'm surprised to read this on NL's because generally your posts are fairly objective and based on hard data rather than 'blog sentiment.
Second paragraph just smacks of ideology. Let's analyze it:
1. Done nothing for America. There is no objectivity in this statement at all. All opinion, no substance. We could spend all day on this one. First rule of thumb is that this is impossible to measure.
2. Hiding on his ranch. Cindy Sheehan is pitiful. It is a sad situation altogether. Cindy isn't a thorn. She is just a poor ignorant woman who has been massively embarrassed on national media. Have you seen her interviews?
3. Social security reform was railroaded by the Democrat party. No reaching across the aisle there. No compromise, they didn't even want to discuss it. According to the Democrat Party, nothing is wrong with Social Security and it should be left alone. The rest of the issues-- Geez, Mochi, do you honestly believe that these issues don't continue to be worked on while the President vacations, while Congress is in recess?
What can a president do about oil prices? What has any president EVER done about oil prices? Oil prices today are not about supply its about demand. China you know? Who promised oil from Iraq?
Mochi, who is having a hard time making ends meet? I hear this a lot, but I look around and everyone seems to be doing fine or are even better off than ever. (And I know a great cross section of people)
Are you having difficulty filling up your SUV?
Not being mean-spirited or anything, Mochi, but am just getting used to seeing a bit more objectivity and level-headedness on NL's, and this one threw me for a loop.

Do we live in the same country?
Wolnosc,
Sorry, WSC. I guess I did spend too much time out of the country and forget how spoiled Americans are...
-Jack
Great response and thanks for sharing your personal story.
WSC,
I have similar story. I grew up as a missionary's kid and knew "want" all my life. I am the child of parents who STILL own nothing, as they have devoted their lives to the service of others as opposed to the pursuit of amassing wealth. Thankfully, they won't need in the future, as I have prepared for their old age, as well as my wife and my own.
I put myself through university by working at McDonalds and taking out student loans. WSC, I don't live in suburbia, I live in rural SC on 90 acres of land. My home is 4000 sq feet, made of stone and registered with the historical society. Every bit of my life and estate I built myself piece by piece. I got no special breaks, just worked my rear off and planned. I refused to give into excuses for where I was. This is still a land of opportunity for anyone who takes it, and failure has less to do with fortune than it does with lacking initiative.
On the other hand, I have a close friend who lived in a cardboard box (when he could find one) and he and his family drank from the same rivulet of water that everyone in the "community" washed and defacated in. We worked with a tribe of people who owned less clothing between the entire tribe than what you are wearing on your back right now. Ever eaten rat and sago worms? Actually the worms are quite tasty, but the rat leaves a little to be desired. I have little empathy for our spoiled nation who thinks that hardship is paying $3.00 a gallon for gas and having to eat hamburgers. Our nation and its excess and "poor mouthing" earns the derision it receives from the rest of the world. Universally we are referred to as "Fat Americans" and it is true. More accurately we are becoming a nation who refuses to be thankful.
Cindy is pitiful. She has been manipulated by the left, made to look foolish by the right. Not sanctimonious, just true. Ignorant? Very. Her "elucidations" are elementary has no understanding of geo-politics. For example, she compared Iraq to Afghanistan governmentally.
Also, I hate to have to repeat this over, but I credit neither sainthood, moral authority or divine enlightenment upon parents who have lost children in combat. When Cindy enters the realm of politics using her son's death as a tool, then she enters herself into the political arena.
I'll just ignore the last statement, but I think its really cute.

Your house sounds pretty cool...
Well, I just needed to make a point, Mochi. I am also black as the ace of spades and proud of it.

Hi Mochi,
I posted a thought about gasoline prices over at my site. Your thoughts?
News Snipet 'Blog: NOT A ONE...
Excellent comments, Jack, I couldn't agree more.
My comment about your house wasn't sarcastic. I'd like to move down south.
I commented on your site.
Jack, you are the man!! Tell it like it is!
just a link about "who is having a hard time making ends meet?" from today's Reuters ... begins with
WASHINGTON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. poverty rate rose in 2004 for the fourth year in a row, driven by an increase in poor whites while the median income for Americans as a whole remained roughly flat, the government said on Tuesday.
The percentage of the U.S. population living in poverty rose to 12.7 percent from 12.5 percent in 2003, as 1.1 million more people slipped into poverty last year, the Census Bureau said in its annual poverty report.
The ranks of the poor rose to 37.0 million from 35.9 million the previous year, the report said.

LG,
To understand poverty one must not only travel, but live overseas. We have NO concept of poverty in this nation.

WSC,
Can't say I agree with your opening statement. Human suffering is not relative, except maybe to Scientologists. :)
Agree with the rest though!
