Rational Republicans
Hats off to moderate Republicans in the south who realize short term returns from drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve are not worth the long term environmental effects. Alternative energy sources are the key to energy independence and the average American knows it. It will be interesting to see what else is dumped from the budget.

Keep waiting for those "alternative" sources and energy independence the left keeps telling us about. Have waited for three decades. Where the heck are they, Mochi?

Oh, what are the long term effects?
I don't want to patronize you but alternative energy sources are real. Hybrid vehicles, wind energy, ethanol fuels, solar power, they all exist. Oil is a finite resource, tapping a finite resource is not an infinite solution, hence raping a national refuge to mine a limited resource is stupid.
Mochi, according to all research we have enough oil in the United States to last us 400 years. I think that we could develop alternative sources LONG before that, but in the meantime we have to continue to travel back and forth to work.
What really is funny to me, is that the new hybrids make more miles per gallon than cars produced in the last decade. As a matter of fact, the Honda Insight makes only about 7 miles per gallon than the CRX did in the 1990s. What's going on there?
I am all for alternative fuels and means of energy, but that doesn't help the poor people now who can't afford an over-priced hybrid and can't feed their family because of gas prices. I see THIS a lot!

I have read research indicating 50 years based on current consumption escalation rates. Can you point me to the 400 year scenarios? Maybe they don't assume an increase of consumption over time.
Actually, Mochi, I think it was based on an isolationist policy of self-sufficiency--American oil for American use--not exporting, and also taking into consideration shale refinement. I will try to find the report for you tonight.

Mochi, I think the 35 year number is supposed to be the "peak oil" number. There is, however, a lot of guesswork involved, but the government numbers are said to be grossly unreliable. (They have revised them many times both up and down I guess). Needless to say we do need to look toward alternative sources, but that won't help the poor people now who have to rely on older cars to get them back and forth to work.
Will be back,

Mochi, how can you characterize ANWR drilling as "raping a national refuge" when the area for mining was designated at the same time ANWR was created? There is a specific plot of land within ANWR that was designated for drilling oil.
