No more insurgents

Reading news on Iraq in newspapers this morning I was taken by the overuse of the word insurgent. Four contractors were killed by a mob in Baghdad after they took a wrong turn. The mob was described as a group of insurgents. US raids in Iraq killed 20 people, all described as insurgents. We should start calling these people what they are, Iraqis. The number of foreign fighters in Iraq is nominal. AP reporters should confirm everything they are told by the US military since it's most of what they are being told is a load of crap. Does anyone believe that the US is able to effectively target "foreign militant safehouses" without killing innocent people?

An insurgent is defined as an individual who rises in revolt against established authority, especially a government. Considering the lack of Sunni involvement in the electoral process I would argue that an established authority in the mind of many Iraqis doesn't exist. These people should be called Iraqi revolutionaries since they are militants in the struggle for revolution.

I agree, they are using the word "insurgent" as a catchphrase, equivalent to "terrorist". It's that old "repeat it often enough.." propaganda tool that brainwashes to effectively.

This is neither an argument for or against the war here. But if we invaded their country, and they are the ones who actually live there and they are the ones who will have to deal with it after we "pull out" (I quote that because we will never leave that country, such are the ways of Imperialism), I wonder what they call our government...
We can safely say now our country neither unites or liberates or spreads freedom like we were guaranteed we would before we invaded. So what does that make us? How are we defined? We are awesome at labeling others and doing things our way and no way else. This country should look in the mirror. When an overwhelming majority of the world does not like us, how are they wrong and how are we right?

From my experience, right-wingers simply think they're right and the rest of the world is wrong. But sadly, I think we are seen as a great evil by many across the globe. And that spells disaster.

Hey Shea!

This happened though LONG before Bush took office. America has never been well liked--and that happened long before we were born.
