This is the American media at its finest. Another standout example of media deception is Hugo Chavez, the democratically elected president of Venezuela. Tensions were very high between the U.S. and Venezuela in 2002 and we wanted both Saddam and Chavez ousted. Venezuela had never done anything to “threaten” the U.S. so instead of a military attack, the CIA tried to establish a coup, but ultimately failed. Every major publication in the U.S. reported Chavez’s resignation due to the people’s dissent. However, as global media outlets did report, he was abducted, survived, and retained his presidency.
The U.S. media have villainized Chavez, who indeed has defied the U.S. at any opportunity, but some media sources outside of the U.S. happen to report objectively, and describe Chavez as an overwhelming majority of the Venezuelan population would: a hero and a liberator from heavily U.S. influenced governments that have severely exploited their people and environment. You do not, and will not, hear/see that on CBS, ABC, Fox or any of the Times though. So Kofi, welcome to the club.
