The fall guy

Maybe Brownie wasn't such an idiot after all...

Katrina Briefings 19 hours prior to the storm hitting the coast.

Of course the President was "working hard" from his ranch in Crawford.

WSC,

I guess my question is going to be, when is everyone going to wake up and realize that the government is not the answer to our problems--but a great deal of the cause?

The new revelations about this situation indicate that the current administration was not simply inept or even negligent, but deliberately chose not to take steps to avoid the consequences of a large-scale disaster. We now know that they were not unaware of the severity of the situation. They knew what could happen. Bush's excuse of "Oops, we made an error" no longer applies. They actually decided not to bother.

So my question is, Why? What could possibly be in it for them to follow that course of action? Did they think they could improve their approval ratings by waiting for the disaster to occur, then come in later to appear as rescuers? It hardly seems so, since they dropped the ball on that one, and it would make more sense PR-wise to be prepared rather than demonstrate a lack of preparedness.

Maybe they were pandering to the Christian extremists who agree with Pat Robertson, who appear to represent a sizeable block of shareholders in the GOP, and decided they could exloit the pending disaster as a gift from God to rid them once and for all of Mardi Gras debauchery, "devil's music", etc.?

Whatever their reasons, it does not instill confidence that the Bush administration cares so little about real national security issues that American lives are not worth a plug nickel to them.

Shea,

Do you think that is just because he doesn't like us black people?

Jack,
I know that was what that rapper said at the grammy awards or something, but in my opinion the neocons' motives spring from their desire for money and power. They like black people just fine if they can exploit them to those ends. If it's any consolation, they seem to regard white people the same way.

You know, Shea, I think you have defined politicians very well with your statement! (Not saying that you were painting with such a broad brush--just that I am)

Hi WSC,

I am very much a naturalist. I point out that we have had ice ages in the past, and wild fluxuations in the earth's weather and disposition. While I am very much against people abusing the environment, I think mother nature herself has a hand in much of what happens--at least if our known history is any indicator.
