An excuse to delay Roberts?

One quotation from a list compiled by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

"Burns, Inhofe and McConnell Among Group Threatening to Block Nominees If Clinton Went Ahead With Recess Appointments. In 1999, 13 Republican senators threatened to block all of Clinton’s judicial nominees for a full year after he used his recess privilege. The Republican group, which was led by Sen. Jim Inhofe, also included Sens. Burns, McConnell, Thomas and Voinovich. [Washington Times, 12/23/99]"

I guess if Democrats exercise their right to block Roberts, Republicans won't be able to whine about it.

Yep, I didn't agree with it back then, and still don't.

Roberts almost fits Souter's profile. Souter turned out to be liberal, even though presented as a conservative by a Republican president. Same can be said for O'Connor, Kennedy, Warren, Brennan, Blackmun, and Stevens.

Here are some of the things said about Souter who became a poster boy for liberal activism in the Supreme Court:

"This decision had the advantage of being acceptable to conservatives, plus Democrats won't be able to attack him. There is nothing to grab a hold of, to whack him on."

"Virtually every conservative who knows him trusts him and thinks he's a competent guy." – Newt Gingrich

"This guy is a complete S.O.B. of a conservative and you can't prove it." – P.J. O'Rourke

"[He] has voiced opposition to many forms of abortion. He dislikes affirmative-action programs, contending that they amount to reverse discrimination. Also, he has vigorously defended ... the Lord's Prayer in its public schools." – Los Angeles Times

In fighting the Roberts nomination the Democrats may be cutting off their nose to spite their face.
